Standing in water? Read two lines, then call.
Shut off your main water valve. Then call. Everything below can wait until the truck is on its way.
Before we arrive
Six things that limit the damage.
In the minutes before a plumber reaches you, these are what actually reduce the repair bill. Do the first one now.
-
Shut off the main water valveUsually at the front of the house near the hose bib, or in a box at the curb. Turn it clockwise until it stops. If you can't find it, we'll walk you to it on the phone.
-
Kill power to any wet areaIf water is near outlets, appliances or a panel, switch that circuit off at the breaker — from a dry spot. Don't wade into standing water to reach a switch.
-
Shut the gas to a leaking water heaterTurn the gas control dial to OFF and close the valve on the supply line. For electric, switch off the breaker. A tank firing dry damages itself in minutes.
-
Move what water ruins firstRugs, cardboard boxes, electronics and anything wooden sitting on the floor. Lift furniture legs onto foil or blocks. This is the difference between a dry-out and a replacement.
-
Photograph everything, wetWide shots of each room and close-ups of the damage, before anyone cleans up. Insurance adjusters pay on documentation, and it disappears the moment you start mopping.
-
Don't pour chemicals down a blocked drainCaustic cleaners sit in a full line, don't clear it, and burn whoever opens it next — including us. If a drain is already backed up, chemicals only make the visit harder.
